About Dynamics plugins
Dynamics plugins control how loud a signal is from moment to moment. A compressor reduces the level of the loudest parts so a performance sits more evenly in a mix, a limiter sets a ceiling the signal cannot pass, a gate mutes everything below a threshold, and a transient shaper adjusts attack and sustain independently of overall level.
Most engineers reach for dynamics processing early, because level has to be under control before tone shaping and effects can be judged fairly. A vocal compressed with a slow attack and a fast release keeps its consonants while sitting steady under the music. A drum bus treated with a transient shaper can gain punch with no change in average volume at all.
The dynamics plugins on Audioloom are built by mixing and mastering engineers who use them on their own records, so the defaults tend to reflect real session starting points.
A compressor reduces the dynamic range of a signal by turning down anything that crosses a threshold you set. The result is a more even performance that holds its place in a mix. Attack and release controls decide how quickly it reacts, which shapes the punch of a sound as much as it controls the level.
Both reduce dynamic range, but a limiter uses a very high ratio and a fast attack to stop a signal exceeding a fixed ceiling, while a compressor applies gentler and more gradual gain reduction. In practice, compressors shape a sound and limiters protect a level.
Use a gate to remove bleed between hits and a compressor to control the level of the hits themselves. Many drum chains use both, with the gate first to clean up the signal and compression after it to shape what is left.
