About EQ & Tone Shaping plugins
An equalizer plugin raises or lowers specific frequency ranges within a sound. Cutting around 250 Hz can clear mud from a dense mix, a gentle lift above 10 kHz adds air to a vocal, and a steep high-pass filter removes rumble that eats headroom without contributing anything audible.
EQ comes in a few broad flavours. Surgical digital equalizers offer precise, transparent control and suit corrective work such as removing a resonance. Analogue-modelled equalizers impose a character of their own, adding subtle saturation and phase shift alongside the gain change, which is often exactly why engineers prefer them for broad tonal moves. Dynamic EQ combines both ideas, applying a gain change only while a band crosses a threshold, so it acts more like a frequency-aware compressor.

An EQ plugin changes the balance between frequency ranges in a sound, boosting some and cutting others. It is used both correctively, to remove problems such as rumble or a harsh resonance, and creatively, to make an instrument sit in its own space in a mix.
Cutting is generally safer because it removes what you do not want without adding gain or emphasising noise. Boosting is useful when a sound genuinely lacks a range. A common approach is to cut narrowly to fix problems and boost broadly to shape character.
A dynamic EQ applies its gain change only when the level in a frequency band crosses a threshold, then releases when the level drops back. It is useful for problems that come and go, such as a vocal that turns harsh only on the loudest notes.
